Athens, Greece

Gods, marble
and democracy,
on every corner.

Urban Tales is a GPS audio guide app that narrates the stories behind Athens' temples, theatres and old neighbourhoods automatically as you walk, at your own pace, with no tour group to follow.

How it works

Open the app.
Start walking.

No preparation, no pre-booked route, no group to keep up with. Urban Tales works the moment you step outside.

01

Download and open the map

The app shows the landmarks around you as soon as you open it, from the Acropolis to the smallest Byzantine church in Plaka.

02

Walk toward anything that catches your eye

As you get close to a landmark, its story starts by itself. Put your phone in your pocket and keep walking.

03

Build a route or explore freely

Create a half-day route, a full-day itinerary, a 7 Wonders tour or your own path. Or ignore all of that and wander; the app keeps up.

What you'll hear

The Athens most visitors
walk straight past.

These are the kinds of stories Urban Tales tells as you walk. Each one starts when you're standing in the right place.

History

Parthenon · Acropolis

It survived 2,000 years, until someone stored gunpowder inside

The Parthenon was a temple, a treasury, a church and a mosque. In 1687, during a Venetian siege, the Ottoman garrison was keeping gunpowder in it. A Venetian shell hit the building, and the explosion tore out its middle. Most of the ruin you see dates from that single day.

Legend

Erechtheion · Acropolis

Athena won the city with an olive tree

Legend says Athena and Poseidon competed to become the city's patron right here. Poseidon struck the rock with his trident; Athena offered an olive tree, and the Athenians chose her gift. An olive tree still grows beside the temple today.

Fun fact

Temple of Olympian Zeus · Central Athens

The temple that took 638 years to finish

Athens' tyrants started it around 520 BC and abandoned it. A Seleucid king restarted it in 174 BC. The Roman emperor Hadrian finally completed it in the 2nd century AD. Fifteen of its 104 columns still stand; a sixteenth lies where a storm knocked it down in 1852.

History

Panathenaic Stadium · Pangrati

The only stadium in the world built entirely of marble

Races for the Panathenaic Games were run in this hollow long before it had seats. Rebuilt in marble in AD 144 and again for 1896, it hosted the first modern Olympic Games, and the Olympic flame is still handed over to each host nation here.

Fun fact

Tower of the Winds · Roman Agora

Athens had a clock that worked at night, 2,000 years ago

Around 50 BC, the astronomer Andronikos of Cyrrhus built an eight-sided tower with sundials outside and a water clock inside, fed by a spring on the Acropolis. A bronze Triton on the roof showed the wind. It's the only clock tower to survive from classical antiquity.

Cinematic

Odeon of Herodes Atticus · Acropolis slope

Callas, Sinatra and Pavarotti sang under the Acropolis

Herodes Atticus built this theatre in AD 161 in memory of his wife. It lay in ruins for centuries until its seats were rebuilt in marble in the 1950s. Since then it has been the stage of the Athens Festival: Maria Callas sang here in 1957, Frank Sinatra in 1962, and Luciano Pavarotti twice.

Where to walk

Athens' neighbourhoods,
explained through stories.

Urban Tales covers the whole city. These are the areas where the stories are thickest.

Acropolis & its slopes

The Parthenon, the Erechtheion and the Caryatids on top; the Odeon of Herodes Atticus and the Theatre of Dionysus below. The densest square kilometre of stories in the city.

Plaka & Anafiotika

The old town under the Acropolis: neoclassical houses, small Byzantine churches and, at the top, Anafiotika, a whitewashed village built by islanders from Anafi in the 19th century.

Monastiraki & the Roman Agora

The flea market, Hadrian's Library and the Tower of the Winds, all within a few minutes of each other, with the Acropolis looming above.

Thissio & the Ancient Agora

The marketplace where Socrates argued with passers-by, crowned by the Temple of Hephaestus, the best-preserved temple in Greece. A pedestrian walkway links it to the Acropolis.

Syntagma & the National Garden

The Hellenic Parliament, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its Evzones guard, and a shady garden that leads to the Temple of Olympian Zeus and Hadrian's Arch.

Koukaki & Pangrati

Quieter streets south and east of the centre: the Acropolis Museum on one side, the marble Panathenaic Stadium on the other.

Fun Facts

The surprising and the strange: the temple that took 638 years, the clock that ran on spring water. Perfect for a long walk or for exploring with kids.

Cinematic

Athens as a stage: summer concerts under the Acropolis, open-air cinemas and the films and stars the city has drawn.
